Elite/Grayhounds & MN Prize win in Rochester

By Don Bowman

Finally a nice sunny weekend, with no rain, proved to be fine ingredients for tournament championships for a couple of local teams! The site was McQuillan Park in Rochester, Minn. – the home of the 2008 Senior Softball USA Northern Championships.

In mens 50’s major plus play, No. 2 seeded Elite/Grayhounds of Little Canada, stunned the state’s No. 1 rated 50’s powerhouse Kevitt/Ploog 50’s out of Brooklyn Center, in back-to-back games to capture 2008 championship honors. Kevitt was 2-0 in seed games heading into the finals, while Elite was 1-1. Both games were thrillers with Elite nipping the Excavators 32-31 and 35-31 to win a berth in the SSUSA Tournament of Champions in Flordia next spring.

In the mens 55’s/60’s play it was the battle of the Prize Company, with the 60’s Prize Company defeating the 55’s Prize club by five runs in the finals and also winning a berth to the tournament of champions!

Other championship brackets will be listed in this publication in the next issue as scores have yet to be reported by tournament officials.

6’s Wild/WSL Tournament recap

The 6’s Wild/WSL tourney is fast becoming one the top softball events in the midwest! The tourney was broken down into a ‘Upper’ division and ‘Lower’ division. In the very tough upper bracket this past weekend at the Treasure Island Softball Complex (Red Wing), Contractor’s Capital topped the 16-team, star-studded field to win the 2008 championship, taking home the several thousand dollar championship prize package!

CC double dipped previously No. 1 ranked in the state Redwood/Worth twice in the finals with 30-20 and 13-11 scores. The championship was particularly sweet for CC due to the fact they lost their opening round game to Salscheiders, and had to come all the way back to win the title. Finishing a very respectable third place was T 13’s of Nebraska and grabbing fourth-place hardware was Theraldson’s of North Dakota.

In the 28-team lower division, DLB/Shirtsandlogo’s defeated ISH/Miken in the finals while Prime Mortgage/JEB and Lucky’s/MN finished third and fourth,  respectively.

Easton/Hooters/Rockets wins again

The 2nd Annual Thunderboltz Softball Classic saw the Easton/Hooters/Rockets men’s C club, featuring legendary Robbie ‘Rocket’ Hortenbach at the wheel, win the men’s class C championship, and check for over $1,000! That will buy a LOT of flashing, plastic beer mugs from China!

Resmondo claims USSSA Major NIT

No surprise in Columbus, Ind., this past weekend as No. 1 rated Resmondo (Ohio), steamrolled through the USSSA Major NIT, defeating an up-and-coming Line Drive (Mich.) club 37-17 in the finals. What was interesting is that Line Drive is classified class B this season, a rarity that a B team went this far in a major tournament. Third and fouth place went to Jean Shoppe and GTL, respectively.

Hoffman stays hot

Hoffman (White Bear Lake) continues to sizzle at the mens class D level this spring! This time they won a USSSA World Berth by winning the BeBops D World Invitational in Blaine last weekend. In the tournament finals, they beat a very strong McKinley Hill team 19-4 , who battled back to the finals themselves by winning five straight on Sunday! The MVP of the tournament was Hoffman’s Nate Fehrman who was unstoppable.

The 26-team tournament field boasted some the top mens class D teams in the midwest, many of which will have more opportunities to win D world berths down the road!
