Gopher baseball challenging for Big Ten title

By Don Bowman

The Golden Gopher baseball team as of this writing is 9-6 in Big Ten play, and tied for second place (with Indiana) in the 2012 Big Ten standings! The Gopher hardballers are 26-20 overall and trail on the Purdue Boilermakers who are 14-4 and 34-7 overall.

This is a great week to check out U of M baseball as the team played their last home of game ever at nostalgic Siebert Field on May 1 vs. St. Thomas, before closing out the week vs. Penn State on May 4-6. The May 4 and 6 games will be at the Metrodome, while the Saturday May 5 tilt will be at Target Field. Come out and support this great program!

Gopher softball mired in losing streak

The Gopher women’s fastpitch team has fallen in the ‘crapper’ in recent weeks after a great start to their season. Despite winning two of three from perennial powerhouse Michigan, the lady Gophers have lost their last four games, including getting swept by Penn State on the road last weekend. The team hopes to snap out of it in time just to qualify for the Big Ten postseason tourney.

They might want to consider altering their early season schedule in future years, and play more games at home, even if that means playing the Metrodome or other indoor sites in February and March. This season alone, the team played in nonconference tourneys in Las Vegas, Boca Raton, Fla., Tempe, Ariz., North Carolina, Georgia and more.

Since the investment has not paid off to the athletic department, look and hope for better economic decisions in the future.

Weather cancels fastpitch tourneys

Cold, rainy weather this past weekend put a ‘damper’ on several local varsity fastpitch tournaments the weekend of April 28. At the Polar Classic in North St. Paul, North High, Zumbrota, Burnsville and Centennial were among teams that claimed first-round wins over solid opponents, before rains cancelled the rest of the action.

Look for make up games in this tourney and others, to be played on May 12 at various sites.

The Tartan Invitational also was canceled after the first round. That, too, will make up some action down the road as well. Check your local papers for updates!

Resmondo finally loses ... big

The No. 1 team in the land for men’s major slow pitch, Resmondo of Florida, were clubbed, beaten and humiliated by No. 2 rated Laservision (CA) in the finals of the Kansas City USSSA Major NIT last weekend. Final score, 50-19!

MN Masters 60’s return from Vegas

The MN Masters 60’s major club, who has more frequent flyers than any team out there, just returned from yet another softball tournament trip in Las Vegas, this year so far they played in Florida, Utah. Nevada, and also have schedule stops in Colorado, Georgia, Florida, and more!

Not sure how the team performed on the field, but I heard the team came home with a lot ‘haircuts’ in Las Vegas, led by team barber/chapperones Tony Udean and Lon Stole!

Borndale gets an ace

Congrats to former Coffee Cup softball star Greg “Red” Borndale for nailing a hole in one on a local golf course in April!

Kittleson named SRO umpire chief

Craig “Puff” Kittleson has been tabbed the umpire in chief for SRO softball operations! Area players and teams are looking forward to take numerous potshots at this guy this summer, he might want to wear a protective-armored vest! (LOL!)

RIP Otto and Arlene

Let’s Play Softball would like to offer condolences to Billy Geisbauer (Korba’s/Rickers Softball), on the passing of his father Otto last week, and also to Jim Milanovich, who’s wife Arlene passed away last week as well. Jim plays for the MN Masters 70’s ball club.

6’s Wild Tourney set for May 19-20

The 6’s Wild Softball tourney at Treasure Island Fields in Red Wing is May 19-20. Some of the top teams in the state will battling it out for thousands of dollars in cash!
