By Gerry Turnberg

USSSA State Director

Central Divisional Vice President

Our Youth State Championships were held July 14-15 in Champlin, North St. Paul and Oakdale. Congratulations to ALL of the teams that participated and to our 2012 State Champions in the Girls’ 10 & Under, Birch Grove Flamethrowers from Brooklyn Park. The Girls’ 12 & Under was won by Golden Valley’s Spectrum Orange Crush.

In the Girls’ 14 & Under Competitive division, the Burnsville Braves were undefeated. The Hurricanes from Coon Rapids were the 14 & Under Recreational State champs. The 16 & Under Competitive was won by the Burnsville Inferno. Oakdale’s Rockies were crowned the 16 & Under Recreational State Champs.    Champlin’s Elm Creek Softball was a perfect 5-0 in the Girl’s 19 & Under division.

The Girls’ Youth World Tournament was held in Clovis, N.M., July 20-22.  Congratulations to Chaos/Breakaway Sportswear who won the 19 & Under Competitive World Championship, going 5-0.

The Crystal Frolics, Minnesota’s longest running and one of the most prestigious tournaments in our state, was held last weekend. Congratulations to Jim Wajda, Tony Schrepfer, Scott Berggren and the City of Crystal for once again putting on a first-class event. It was GREAT seeing all of the top teams in our state playing in this event.

In our season-long Men’s B & C NIT Incentive program, the Champions were Xtreme/Combat with 598 points. They earned $1000. In second place was Team Stoop/Alt Analysis/Dog House with 567 points. They earned $600, plus an additional $1000 for being the highest finishing “C” team for a total of $1600. Third place went to McAlpines Well/Hoaglund Insurance with 517 points, earning $300.

Our Regional & State tournaments start this weekend and continue throughout the month of August. World tournaments take center stage in September and our Fall States are in October.

Another reminder, all teams going to World tournaments must play in their State Tournament and a National Tournament.

The Central Division National Tournaments will take place August 25-26 and over Labor Day weekend.

• Men’s “C” – Blaine, MN (August 25-26)

• Men’s “D” – Bridgeton, MO (Sept. 1-3)

• Men’s “E” – Omaha, NE (Sept. 1-3)

• Women’s “B/C” & “D” – Blaine, MN (August 25-26)

With the postseason right around the corner, remember if you play on teams in different classes, you are eligible ONLY for those weekend and postseason tournaments with your HIGHEST classified team. Teams found in violation of this will forfeit all awards and travel expense monies won and individual player eligibility may be placed in jeopardy. Ignorance is not an excuse; know the rules!
